Description
Donna Bowen McDaniel, a Tufts alum and journalist, and her co-author,
Vanessa Julye, spent seven years researching and writing /Fit for
Freedom, Not for Friendship: Quakers, African Americans, and the Myth of
Racial Justice/. Both women have been part of the Quaker community for
decades, and Julye serves as the Committee for Ministry on Racism
Coordinator with Friends General Conference in Philadelphia.
The book uncovers misperceptions about the Religious Society of Friends
(Quakers) historically supporting racial justice and equality. In fact,
the authors reveal that the majority of Quakers, like the majority of
people of European descent, discriminated against African Americans over
the centuries. Ironically, Quakers were the first denomination to
denounce slavery and require members to end their involvement in the
practice. McDaniel and Julye “believe that only by understanding our
past will we be able to create a future in which we are all one.”
A book signing sponsored by Tufts Bookstore and reception will follow
the talk. An exhibit about the authors will be on display in Tisch
Library lobby from October 13 – November 16, 2009.
