Dr. John Saunders, D52—Life After Death

John Saunders, D52, was born Ignacy Silberherz in Poland in 1925. He was part of the flourishing Jewish population in the city of Stanislawow, now part of Ukraine. His father had been an officer in the Austrian and Polish armies. His mother was proud of her upper-class background. He inherited his blond hair and blue eyes from her. One can’t help but wonder if those eyes helped him survive. Not just their Aryan color, which, at age 86, is still a clear grey-blue, but the way in which he uses them. When he talks to you, smiling or sober-faced, he looks you straight in the eye. It’s hard to look away. The Nazis ripped away everything that was dear to him, but John Saunders, D52, was determined to write his own ending to his story. Come hear first-hand the experiences of Dr. John Saunders.

Jackson 1962: Our 50-Year Journey—Overcoming Barriers, Social Pressures and Tradition

We graduated from Jackson College in 1962. Unless you were interested in a career in nursing, teaching, government service or the telephone company, your options were limited. But social turmoil was changing our world, and some of us saw opportunities not available to previous generations of women.

We invite you to attend our Super Seminar and hear how four amazing women dreamed big dreams and lived a life they probably could not have imaged! While we’re talking, we hope you’ll be thinking of something from your own experience that you would like to share during the question and answer period.

Moderator:
Joyce Shushan Barsam, Trustee Emerita of Tufts University and national leader of the Armenian-American community

  • Nancy Agress Brodsky: How Resigning from a Teaching Job Led to a Harvard Ph D.
  • Dorothy Murphy Meletzke: Dealing with the “Skirt Line” in a Male-Dominated Military Organization
  • Nancy Elliott Blethen: How One Lone Jackson Grad Beat over 100 Male Applicants for a Coveted Executive Position
  • Linda Malm: From Playboy Bunny to College Dean

After hearing from our speakers, we will welcome comments, questions and personal stories from the audience.
This seminar sponsored by the Association of Tufts Alumnae, ATA.

Astronaut Rick Hauck, A62, H07, A87P, J92P,—Human Spaceflight - Where Have We Been and Where are We Going?

In the 60's and 70's the United States celebrated the success of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, highlighted by the success of the mission of Apollo 11 and its crew of Collins, Aldrin and Armstrong, the latter two stepping on the moon. During the next three decades the space shuttle flew 135 flights before its retirement in 2011. What (if anything) is next?
