Description
Tufts Alumni Washington, D.C. invites you to join us for an evening with Adam Levner, A96, and Heather Rieman, J96, the founders and directors of Critical Exposure, to support this great organization in its quest to empower youth and promote change.
Critical Exposure is a non-profit organization with a mission to teach youth in the D.C. area and beyond to use the power of photography and their own voices to become effective advocates for school reform and social change. Founded in 2004 by two Tufts University alumni, Critical Exposure has worked with more than 800 students in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Austin, and Albuquerque. Participating students have learned to use photography as a both a vehicle for self-expression and an advocacy tool. Traveling exhibits of students’ photographs and testimony have been shown at state capitols, art galleries, universities, cafes, and other public spaces. The students and their images have helped secure more than $400 million in new funding for underfunded schools and facilities, as well as address other issues impacting youth, including job training opportunities, teen pregnancy, and D.C.’s dropout crisis.
The Way We See It: Young Photographers Examine, Define, and Change Their World features work from Critical Exposure students and other Photovoice projects from Mali, India, and Tucson. It is an exhibit about a participatory educational process that fosters individual and community awareness, youth empowerment, and social change.
This activity will be included in the 150 Acts of Active Citizenship program, running throughout Tufts University Alumni Association’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. Further information, as well as a list of other acts taking place around the world, can be found at www.tuftsalumni.org/150acts.
