Description
Barbara Wallace Grossman, AG84, Tufts University associate professor and chair of the Department of Drama and Dance, dedicated years to researching and writing her current book, A Spectacle of Suffering: Clara Morris on the American Stage. Morris, who some called one of “America’s greatest actresses,” reinvented herself as a result of both devastating medical problems and changing trends in the entertainment industry during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Morris, a feminist, became an author, publishing hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles and nine books, of which six were fiction and three were memoirs.
Grossman’s biography of her is the solely published one, and it draws extensively from Morris’s fifty-four-volume diary. Grossman also is the author of Funny Woman: The Life and Times of Fanny Brice. She maintains a staunch commitment to the arts and social justice, both within and outside of Tufts. Grossman has received several awards for her work, including the American Repertory Theatre’s first Leadership in the Arts Award and the Hubert H. Humphrey Humanitarian Award from the National Jewish Democratic Council. Moreover, she serves as the Vice Chair of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, on the Holocaust Museum’s Committee on Conscience, and on the boards of Mass Equality and the American Repertory Theatre. A book signing sponsored by Tufts Bookstore and reception will follow the talk. An exhibit about Barbara Wallace Grossman and her work will be on display in Tisch Library lobby from January 6–February 17, 2010.
