Italy’s Magnificent Lake District

Discover the unique character of Italy’s turquoise lakes as we explore the charming towns, Renaissance villas, and gardens that adorn their shores. We will explore Lake Orta, perched in the mountains, and take in the spectacular frescoes on the legendary island of San Giulio. Continuing on to the Borromean Islands and its Baroque villas, we will see rare birds, exotic gardens, and a palace filled with antiques. On our cruise of lakes Maggiore and Como, we will visit the 18th- and 19th-century villas of Bellagio and the piazzas of Como. In vibrant Milan, Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” and the opulent 14th-century Duomo will be the highlights. We conclude this magical small group journey by crossing the Switzerland border to explore Ascona’s Old Town and Cannobio’s medieval architecture. For this comprehensive program, the single supplement for solo travelers is waived.

Itinerary

Day 1: In Transit
Today we depart for Milan, Italy.

Day 2: Milan/Stresa
Upon arrival, we will transfer to Stresa and the Hotel La Palma. This evening, we will meet for a Welcome Reception and Dinner.

 

Day 3: Orta
This morning we will transfer to scenic Lake Orta, and take a walking tour of Orta San Guilio - a beautiful resort town that sits on a peninsula and juts into the lake. We will then board a boat to Isola San Guilio, the island in the lake, to visit the fourth-century basilica and see its spectacular frescoes.

Day 4: The Borromean Islands
Today we will cruise Lake Maggiore to Isola Madre’s paradise of baroque splendor and botanical gardens. Then, we will head to the rustic fishing village of Isola dei Pescatori and stroll down its narrow streets lined by the quaint houses of the hard-working fishermen and their families who call this island home. Finally, we will visit Isola Bella, the Beautiful Island, extolled by writers over the centuries, and explore its 17th century baroque palace and summer house that is home to a mosaic grotto.

Day 5: Milan
Today we will see some of the world’s most stunning art and architecture in Milan as we visit the Renaissance Santa Maria Delle Grazie and its rectory to see Leonardo da Vinci’s magnificent “The Last Supper.”  We will also visit the museum at La Scala, Italy’s premier opera house, before entering the opulent 14th-century Duomo, a Gothic masterpiece.

Day 6: Stresa

Day 7: Bellagio/Como
Today we will take a boat ride from Tremezzo to Bellagio, situated on the banks of Lake Como. We will explore Bellagio, and roam its lanes and walkways lined with pastel-colored houses, and 18th- and 19th-century villas built by the region’s noble families. We will travel by private boat to Como to discover how the town has kept much of its ancient Roman street plan. Here we will take a walking tour at Piazza Cavour, which fronts the lake and is lined with cafés, hotels, and shops. The remainder of the day is for independent exploration of Como and Bellagio at our leisure.

Day 8: Ascona/Cannobio
Today we will cross the border into Switzerland and head to Ascona, which is situated on the banks of Lake Maggiore. We will take the time to explore its Old Town, centered around the 16th-century church, San Pietro e Paulo, and explore the narrow alleyways that lead to the lakeside promenade.Our second excursion of the day will take us back to Italy's Cannobio, a short distance from Switzerland. Here we will have lunch at a local restaurant, and take in the lakefront piazza, pastel colored buildings that line Lake Maggiore, and visit the town’s famous Santuario della Pieta and its medieval stone buildings.

Day 9: In Transit
Today we transfer to the airport for the return flight to our gateway city.
