River Life in Saxony along the Elbe

Cruise along the River Elbe aboard the deluxe M.S. Swiss Coral from the splendid castles of Prague and the captivating beauty of Bohemia to the medieval river towns of “Saxon Switzerland,” so named for its mountainous vistas, cliff top castles and verdant woodlands. Discover the treasures and the traditions of the Elbe River on our journey to the Czech Republic and Germany. Tour the imposing Königstein Castle; marvel at the Baroque splendors of Dresden and walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther along the narrow streets of historic Wittenberg. Attend specially arranged educational presentations and cultural activities, including a private beer tasting, a demonstration of porcelain craftsmanship in Meissen and an exclusive Village Forum with local residents to discuss life in this ancient region.

Itinerary

Day 1 – U.S.

Depart the U.S. for Berlin, Germany.

Day 2 – Berlin, Germany/Embark M.S. Swiss Coral

Arrive in Berlin and embark on the M.S. Swiss Coral this afternoon. Spend the rest of the day in Berlin at leisure or simply relax on the river boat.

Day 3 – Magdeburg

During our tour today, we’ll experience the breathtaking grandeur of Magdeburg’s cathedral, one of the oldest, largest and most beautiful Gothic churches in Germany. Walk through the historic city center and admire Magdeburg’s exceptional Baroque architecture.

Day 4 - Wittenberg

This morning, set out on a walking tour of the historic university town of Wittenberg and see where Martin Luther changed the course of history by posting his 95 Theses on the door of the Schlosskirche, where Luther is now interred. Visit Luther’s restored home and St. Mary’s Church, which houses an exquisite 16th-century altar by the great German painter, Lucas Cranach. Additionally, we’ll discuss life along the Elbe River during an exclusive Village Forum with local residents.

Day 5 - Meissen

Today, we’ll tour the magnificent Albrechtsberg Castle in the river town of Meissen and stroll through the heart of the old town. We’ll also learn about the history and production of the legendary Meissen porcelain during a special tour of the historic Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur where demonstrations will take us through the various stages of making some of the world’s finest porcelain.

Day 6 - Dresden

Discover Dresden’s rich historical legacy and impressive architectural heritage during a walking tour of the Old Town. We’ll stroll through the Bruehlsche Terrase—the Balcony of Dresden—to the magnificent Frauenkirche and admire the Baroque opulence of the Zwinger Palace, which houses as superb collection of works by Old Masters. During our visit, we’ll take a special back-stage tour of the legendary Semper Opera House, where Strauss and Wagner premiered many of their most famous works.

Day 7 - Pillnitz/Königstein, Germany

Following a relaxing morning of cruising along some of the most beautiful scenery in the Elbe River Valley, visit the 750-year-old Königstein Castle located amid the rocky outcroppings of “Saxon Switzerland.” This evening, observe the ancient German traditions of brewing beer during an exclusive beer tasting and seminar on the ship.

Day 8 - Prague, Czech Republic

Today, explore the architectural treasures of Prague’s Staré Mesto (Old Town) during a walking tour of the historic city center. We’ll see the Old Town Square, visit the Old Jewish Quarter and the Old-New Synagogue, the oldest extant synagogue in Europe. Also, join a behind-the-scenes tour of the Estates Theatre where Mozart conducted the premiere of Don Giovanni in 1787 and attend a specially arranged music recital.

Day 9 - Prague/Disembark m.s. Swiss Coral/Return to the U.S.
