The American Immigrant Experience 1620-2016: Some Things Never Change

Since the first Pilgrim set foot on Plymouth Rock, America has been the destination of desperate people willing to face hostility, first from the environment, then often from those—overwhelmingly Europeans—who had arrived only shortly before the newest settlers. The motto of America, later the United States, could have been, “Be like us, or else!” For three hundred years we accepted anyone, sometimes reluctantly, who could make it to these shores. Then, in 1920, the doors began to shut. By 1927, we were no longer a nation that wanted those most desperate to come. In the 2016 election, immigration will be a major issue. How should we understand immigration within America’s historical context? How do we construct memory in this country? How do we prefer to view ourselves, and what does the actual reality tell us about those of us whose forefathers have made it to America, and how we feel about those who now wish to come here?
