SUMMARY:Tufts Alumni Houston - Shakespeare in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Tufts Alumni Houston for our summer event at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. Come and reconnect with fellow Jumbos, family and friends while enjoying A Midsummer Night’s Dream, one of Shakespeare's most popular and frequently produced plays. There is a strong belief that Shakespeare wrote this work for a wedding feast, but its mixture of fairies and mortals, as well as some of Shakespeare's most memorable verse, makes this classic a universal favorite.\n\n\n\nPlease bring a picnic dinner and folding chair or blanket and meet us at the front of the lawn area to the left of the center. Look for the Tufts balloons and banner.\n\n\n\nPicnic at 7:30 pm\n\nPerformance at 8:30 pm\n\n\n\nWe will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the Houston Food Bank. Please consider bringing an item or two to contribute. This activity will be included in the 150 Acts of Active Citizenship program, running throughout Tufts University Alumni Association’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. Further information, as well as a list of other acts taking place around the world, can be found at www.tuftsalumni.org/150acts.\n\n

SUMMARY:Tufts Alumni San Francisco - Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Tufts Alumni San Francisco invites you to join our book club. Our next book is Stumbling on Happiness, described as "a brilliant book, a useful book, and a book that could quite possibly change the way you look at just about everything. And as a bonus, Gilbert writes like a cross between Malcolm Gladwell and David Sedaris."\n\n\n\nHarvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert asks the important questions: "What would you do right now if you learned that you were going to die in ten minutes? Would you race upstairs and light that Marlboro you've been hiding in your sock drawer since the Ford administration? Would you waltz into your boss's office and present him with a detailed description of his personal defects? Would you drive out to that steakhouse near the new mall and order a T-bone, medium rare, with an extra side of the really bad cholesterol? Hard to say, of course, but of all the things you might do in your final ten minutes, it's a pretty safe bet that few of them are things you actually did today."\n\n\n\nThis is *not* a self-help book. Smart, witty, accessible, and laugh-out-loud funny, Stumbling on Happiness brilliantly describes all that science has to tell us about the uniquely human endeavor to envision the future, and how likely we are to enjoy it when we get there. Come read what the authors of The Tipping Point and Freakonomics have been praising. \n\n\n\nRefreshments will be available for purchase.\n\n\n\nWhether you've already read this intriguing book or it's new to you, we would love for you to join our conversation. Please register for this event and start reading! Also, please share your interest in this book club and ideas for future reads with Bobbie Peyton, G07, at bobbie.peyton@gmail.com.\n\n

SUMMARY:Tufts Engineering Alumni: Using LEGOs in the Classroom: Lessons on Science, Technology, and Teaching
DESCRIPTION:The Tufts University School of Engineering invites all alumni to attend a lecture and discussion by Chris Rogers, Director of Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) on his latest research on ways to bring engineering into the classroom. A cocktail reception will precede the discussion, and as part of the event, hosted by Phil Swain, E80, at his offices at Foley Hoag LLP, attendees will be able to view displays of CEEO research. Tufts School of Engineering Dean Linda Abriola will provide opening remarks, and the lecture will be followed by dessert. \n\n\n\nLecture synopsis:\n\nUsing LEGO bricks to re-engineer STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Learning\n\n\n\nIn this talk Chris Rogers will highlight some of the work at Tufts' Center for Engineering Education and Outreach that has helped thousands of teachers on all continents bring engineering into the classroom. The Center combines research on how children (and their teachers) learn with engineering research in how to develop robotic systems that are easy to use yet very capable. This coupled with outreach efforts with teachers around the world has led to millions of students from kindergarten through college learning engineering with their hands. Rogers will show some of the results of both the engineering and education research, but end with how students have actually used the LEGO toolset to investigate science, math, and even literature.\n\n\n\nMore information about Chris Rogers\n\n

DESCRIPTION:From the olive groves of Tuscany to the turquoise seas of the Italian Riviera, this is a region that always delights Tufts travelers. Traveling the Chianti Road, we will experience the charm of the Tuscan hill towns of San Gimignano, known for its stunning frescoes and impressive architecture, and the equally compelling Castellina. On our visit to the Renaissance city of Florence, we will stop at the magnificent Duomo, the Church of Santa Croce and other spectacular works of art and architecture, and later wander through historic Siena and Lucca. In Carrara, we will discover the origin of the beautiful white marble that, for centuries, sculptors have turned into works of art. Our journey continues on to the Italian Riviera and its delightful coastal towns of Sestri Levante, Santa Magherita and Portofino, and then on to Portovenere and Vernazza in the Cinque Terre, one of the most stunning regions in Italy. \n\n
