Ideas for Active Citizenship

Being an active citizen isn’t about going big or going home—every individual can use a hand of any size. The little things make a big difference these days: a held door, a smile hello, a seat on the subway. When you’re looking for a way to help your community, think of the small stuff that’s been a big help in your life, then think of the power of people.
The smallest effort x 10 suddenly has a huge impact.

Easy office acts:

  • Canned goods collection
  • Children’s book collection
  • School supplies collection
  • Going Green: all computer equipment and lights are turned off for 12 hours
  • Monetary collection for hospital, foster home, homeless shelter, etc.

Easy weekend acts:

  • Park/beach/school playground clean up
  • Soup kitchen
  • 5k for charity: know of a 3.1 mile run around town? Grab some Tufts friends, spread the news, raise some funds, and do some good while getting your workout.
  • Community concert: looking for a musical outlet? Jam outdoors, at the local YMCA, or at a nursing home for free—and leave a friendly tip jar for a good cause.
