Tufts Black Alumni Association launches NYC chapter

July 12, 2011

On June 9, the Tufts Black Alumni Association (TBAA) launched its newest chapter in New York City by welcoming the new dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Joanne Berger-Sweeney, a renowned neuroscientist.

Dean Berger-Sweeney’s inspiring talk, “Diversity and Inclusion at Tufts: Then, Now, and in the Future,” touched on the university’s plans for approaching issues relative to diversity both in and out of the classroom. Keith Wright, A77, a New York State Assemblyman representing the 70th District of New York State, delivered opening remarks.

About 40 alumni enjoyed light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments as they spoke openly with the new dean and celebrated the inaugural event of the NYC chapter. “The venue was amazing,” says event organizer, Jared Pollard, A05, of the Skadden, Arps office in Times Square, which was generously made available by Scott Musoff, A91, a partner of the firm.

“The dean brought a new energy and sense of commitment to the NYC alumni,” adds Pollard. With one of the largest alumni populations—and one of the most diverse—NYC alumni gladly welcomed the TBAA.

“I volunteer for Tufts because it’s my responsibility—and it’s a joy.” Up next on the docket? “The NYC Summer Social,” says Pollard.
