Alumni Weekend is a Jumbo Success

June 16, 2014

Spectacular weather and a mood of excitement and pride served as the backdrop for this year’s Alumni Weekend. More than 1200 alumni gathered on campus the weekend of May 15 - 18 for a host of events, reunions, and, of course, commencement.

The weekend started on Thursday with Tufts Night at Pops, which featured a program of the best of the Boston Pops. Many Jumbos reflected that it was the most enjoyable Pops performance they had ever attended. The following evening, alumni and students cut a rug together on the dance floor to tunes from the ‘50s to today at the Brown and Ballouza: A Dance of the Decades in the Gantcher Center.

Saturday began with Jumbo Love, a special breakfast for couples who fell in love on the Hill. With a record 44 couples in attendance in the Barnum atrium, the event continues to grow in popularity. These lovebirds caught up with their fellow alumni for the cavalcade of classes, the annual march led by 50th reunioners from Goddard Chapel to the alumni family picnic on the residential quad. Saturday evening, classes celebrated their respective reunions at locations around campus and in Davis Square. For Lorenzo Lepore, A74, D77, A03P, the 40th reunion celebration of the class of 1974 was a highlight of the weekend. “Willie Nininger, A74, and his band were excellent,” says Lepore. “David Hastings, A74, A04P, A07P, MG08P, and I got to sit in and play with them for awhile. The two of us played together in every musical group on campus when we were undergraduates, so it was fun to reunite.”

Members of the class of 1964 took the lead again the following morning when they began the march into commencement and were greeted with a heartfelt standing ovation from the audience. While celebrating their 50th reunion was meaningful for all of the members of the class of 1964, it was especially noteworthy for Claire Hirsch, J64, who was joined for the weekend by her mother Gertrude Brown, J34, celebrating her 80th reunion.

Donna Apgar, J64, sums up the general sentiment of the weekend, “We had a blast! Many of my classmates commented to me that this was the best reunion they had ever gone to.”
