Help for job searchers
January 05, 2010
This past year as the economy slumped and unemployment rose, many Tufts alumni found themselves on the job market. Tufts University Career Services is busier than ever, says Leslie Warner, the office’s associate director. "The demand for career coaching has increased tremendously.”
Warner hosts job-search seminars and networking receptions around the country designed to help alumni reconnect and focus on their next career step. Job seekers can also take advantage of online Tufts Career Advisory Network (CAN), which puts a network of alumni advisers at their disposal.
Warner meets with young graduates making their first job change, as well as alumni who graduated 30 years ago, many of whom have lost touch with the university but are eager to give and get job advice.
Maria Menzi, J77, for one, came to Career Services looking for a different position within her field of early childhood development. "Leslie’s seminars gave me wonderful tips on how to market myself for the job I wanted," Menzi says. "I also connected with other alumni at the events."
Tufts CAN, accessible through the Career Services website, hosts 8,500 alumni volunteers ready to give career advice to students and graduates. Also available on the site are a list of job postings and other online resources like CareerSearch, a database of more than four million company profiles.
"Alumni are so willing to help each other," Warner says.
