July 15, 2015
James A. Stern is the recipient of the Ernest T. Stewart Award for Alumni Volunteer Involvement. For more than 30 years, Stern has been an active volunteer of his alma mater, Tufts University. At the age of 32, he became the youngest person ever elected to the Tufts Board of Trustees and went on to hold numerous leadership roles, including board chair from 2003 to 2013. Stern's leadership in fundraising has played an influential role in Tufts' growth during the last three decades from a small, relatively regional institution to a prestigious and internationally recognized research university. In addition to his volunteer service, Stern supports the institution through generous gifts to the annual fund each year and has endowed three professorships at the university and established endowed funds to provide financial aid for undergraduate and graduate students. Stern currently serves as chair and founder of the Cypress Group, a New York-based private equity firm that manages funds in excess of $4 billion.
